Zenos Frudakis at age five in traditional Greek Evzone costume.

Biography

Zenos Frudakis is an American sculptor internationally recognized for his figurative bronze works that explore freedom, identity, and the human condition. Raised in a Greek-American household, he was deeply influenced by classical sculpture, philosophy, and literature from an early age.

As a child growing up in Gary, Indiana, Zenos began sculpting beneath the family’s kitchen table, shaping a piece of dough his mother gave him as she prepared to bake bread. His father, born in Greece, immigrated to the United States as a boy. The eldest of five children raised in a Greek cultural tradition, Zenos developed a deep admiration for classical Greek sculpture. Greek art strongly influenced his aesthetic vision, along with the work of master sculptors Michelangelo, Bernini, Carpeaux, and Rodin. Poetry has also played an important role in his creative life, particularly the works of T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Theodore Roethke, and Robert Graves, as has postmodern and deconstructionist philosophy.

Zenos studied on scholarship at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and completed his formal education with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. He studied sculpture with his brother, sculptor EvAngelos Frudakis, and oil painting with James Hanes—both recipients of the Prix de Rome.

Throughout his career, Zenos has focused on the human figure and portrait, as evidenced by his many monumental figurative works, portrait busts, and bas-reliefs. He is widely recognized for his ability to capture both an accurate likeness and the character and vitality of his subjects. His portfolio includes figurative sculpture, animals, bas-reliefs, portraits—both sculptural and painted—of living and historical figures, as well as poetic and philosophical works informed by a postmodern sensibility.

Over the past five decades, Zenos has created monumental works for public and private collections throughout the United States and internationally. While deeply committed to personal, expressive art, he is also a highly versatile commissioned artist, capable of sculpting subjects ranging from the human form to animals with equal sensitivity and skill.
